The Mt. Rushmore Of Texas Country Music

17 Feb

Tonight we began a new era for That Dang Ol’ Show, airing on 105.3 FM, The Red Dirt Rebel. The Red Dirt Rebel is Texas Country Music Royalty. It leads the way when it comes to a genre that defies labels, rules and convention. It is Texas.

So, in honor of being on The Rebel, we asked you folks to give us your Mt. Rushmore of Texas Country Music. Since we’re Texas, you can have five instead of four. We’re bigger than the rest, might as well have five. We also asked you where you’d build it. I say Palo Duro Canyon, but that’s just me. It’s your mountain. Put it where you want to.

Of course the challenge here is deciding when and where “Texas Country Music” and “Red Dirt Music” begin. Who starts the era??? How far back do you go? Hey, it’s your mountain. You tell us.

So, give us your five artists or bands. Tell us where you’d build it. Have some fun and remember there are no wrong answers. Unless, of course, you say Jerry Jeff Walker. He’s from New Jersey. But he got here as fast as he could!

For me?

I’ll start with the Original Outlaws and say Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson have to be on it. They started a movement. They gave artists permission to tell Nashville to kiss off and do their own thing. Without them, nothing happens going forward. Beyond that??? I’ll let you make a case for who I should vote for.

As always, if you like what we’re doing tell your friends, share it on Facebook, put it out on that Twitter thing and just make a ruckus about it in general. Looking forward to seeing your answers.

Since you’re referring to Texas County…that excludes George Strait, Bob Wills and SRV. Willie, Waylon, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen and Guy Clark. I think those five were the most influential.
Carve their faces into the north-facing slope of Yellowhouse Canyon north of Slaton.
